How do I focus in the dark with a digital SLR?
Hi I have a Canon 450D I have recently been trying some night shots in forests and in tunnels and things but Im having a nightmare being able to focus the image, the AF doesn't get anything at all and MF is just a struggle to be able to see what to focus on, has anyone got tips? I have heard of using a torch but a lot of what I shoot is in the distance and so a torch might not brighten it enough?
Apart from a really bright torch it sounds like the answer is to use manual focus and either aperture priority or manual mode where you can chose the aperture.
By using the theory of depth of field you can focus on a mid distance known as the hyperfocal distance and chose an aperture which will ensure sharpness from that distance to infinity.

You will also need a firm support or a tripod to avoid camera shake at low shutter speeds. If you aren't using any additional lighting it's best to shoot while there is still some light in the sky before it goes completely dark.
