about iron man 2: how can Rhodey wear the armor if he does not have the arc reactor?
I remember Tony said in the first movie that the innovative thing about iron man is the power source, but rodhey wears the mark II in the sequel, and he didn't have the reactor in the chest. do I have to assume that the power source is in the armor itself? a sort of second arc reactor? I rather doubt it
The power is in the suit itself.
Think of it this way: in the comics, Stark doesn't have an arc reactor embedded in his chest. Instead it is in the chest piece of the armor itself. In the original comics, Tony has to wear the whole chest piece of the armor under his clothes in order to keep his heart going. This was changed for the movie because an audience's suspension of disbelief can only go so far for this kind of thing nowadays. In the comics Tony makes a new power source for every Iron Man suit he has and he keeps all the old ones in the Hall of Armor, ready for action at any point in time as they all have a power source already inside them. We can assume that he's trying the same thing in the movie.
So in the comics when Rhodey put on the Iron Man suit for the first time he didn't need an arc reactor in his chest because Tony didn't. In the movies the audience should just assume that Tony likes to keep backup power in his old suits just in case something unforeseen happens.
Also, in the movie you can see Rhodey removing a reactor from the suit's chest piece before handing it over to Hammer, so you know it's in there. And the chest piece on the Mark II/War Machine suit is bigger to accommodate this when you see them next to each other.
