What are some tips on heating a house inexpensively?
Hi! My husband and I just rented a house. The only problem is it's still really cold where we live and the house only has one gas heater. It doesn't heat the entire house very well. And I'm worried it will cost a lot to leave it on all the time. Are there any other ways to heat a house without having to add another heater and risk spending more money on gas bills?
Although I don't have a resolution to your problem, I can offer a few tips. I used to rent a house with my fiance and it was very drafty in there - it got really cold in the winter. Here's what we did.
We put plastic on all of the windows. (You can buy this stuff just about anywhere - Menards, Home Depot, even Walmart I think).
Use door draft guards by all the doors. (Those are the long strips of fabric that are stuffed with cotton or some other type of insulating material. You lay them down at the cracks of the door at the bottom and it'll help keep the cold air from seeping into your home.) If you don't have any, or you don't want to spend money on them, try some old towels. It's better than nothing! I know it's not the most attractive thing either, but once your toes begin to warm up again, you'll be thankful you stuffed them under there. *LOL*
When you sleep at night and when your gone during the day, keep the heater turned down. No need to waist all that energy. At night, I slept with the heating blanket or space heater on. They both use electricity, but if you shut the bedroom door, you only have to worry about the one room staying warm at night, not the whole house.
