how to make a homemade spear gun?
i have a metal spear im my room that i made a few years ago and now i want to make a spear gun. iv been searching but i cant find any easy to follow steps and what materials are required. basically i need step by step instructions on how to make the gun and what i need. i have access to tools such as welder, grinder etc.
what's the caliber of the spear?
I got a object launcher design lying around it can be quite easily adapted to shoot spears. right now due to lack of tools on my end no prototype launcher can last more than one shot. yellow modeling foam just wasn't made for this. its the only material I can shape with my extremely limited tools.
its pretty simple actually. you need a gun, preferably what I have, mosin nagant 91/30, some soviet rifle grenade launching blanks, and what I don't have and would like: drill press, probably a metal working lathe, block of aluminum.
the 91/30 is $35 to $100, you can get 100 soviet rifle grenade blanks for about $15.
if the spear's shaft is larger than .28 caliber, you cannot use the rifle's barrel as the launching device. you use a wooden rod about 18 inches long, .30 caliber and that will be fitted at the end of the spear. the wood rod goes inside to barrel, you build a second barrel out of the aluminum that will fit over the mosin nagant's muzzle. to keep it secure you need to use a steel bolt to literally bolt the muzzle attachment down. the steel bolt will fit behind the front sight post to hold the barrel there. if you don't the barrel and spear will be fired out of the gun instead. and you'll receive enough recoil to cause serious injury.
the spear goes in the 2nd barrel.
when the gun is fired the gas shoot the wooden rod out which hefts the spear forward guided by the 2nd barrel.
I don't know what you'll make this out of, I can probably figure out over 100waysot make something so simple. if I had the tools this would be literally a 15 minute project. you can solder, weld, buy existing pipes that happen to have the proper sizes, drill/mill your own pipes, you can make it out of many pieces or from one piece of metal.
if you can read solidworks 2009 part files I have a sketch of what I'm talking about. its not dimensioned but its just a graphic representation of the part. my use requires the projectile to have fins, your 2nd barrel may or may not require slots for fins.
