What exactly is a flux wire welder?
Can anyone explain to me what exactly a flux wire welder is? The reason I ask its advertised as not needing gas. And will it be able to do the same quality of work as a mig?
Without some type of shielding from oxygen present in the atmosphere, the welding process will result in rapid oxidation of the material being welded. The two most common methods to shield the molten metal from oxygen are flux and gas.
Flux is a chemical that burns with the heat created during the welding to produce a deoxidizing gas around the electrode. The gas (you can think of it as smoke) displaces the oxygen long enough so the weld can cool before it oxidizes. With a wire feed welder, the flux is contained in the hollow core of the welding wire, and its called FCAW (flux core arc welding).
A "stick" welder has the flux on the outside, but that's not a wire feed welder.
The other method is inert gas welding, whereby a gas (typically Ar or CO2 or a mix) displaces the atmospheric oxygen. Its called MIG (metal inert gas) or more correctly GMAW (gas metal arc welding).
Both types really achieve the same thing. In general, the gas welding provides a cleaner weld than flux, but its more expensive. Flux welding is better suited to outdoor welding conditions and thick, dirty materials, where the smoothness of the weld is not so important.
