Is there another way to get the concusive force of a vortex cannon without Acetylene gas?
Was looking at Bang! Goes the Theory and saw their Vortex Cannon and was inspired to try to make one as a Science Fair project. Upon asking my teacher about my idea, he informed me that Acetylene was too dangerous for a student to handle. The only other Vortex Cannons i can find on the internet shoot smoke... Yeah not much of a crowd pleaser. Please help!
The problem with finding a substitute is that acetylene gas is explosive over an extremely wide range of mixtures. Using some other gas will probably require creating exactly the right air/gas mixture so that all of it burns very quickly. Even better would be an oxygen/gas mixture that was perfectly proportioned. In addition, you would have to make space in the cannon for the fuel mix and omit all or almost all the air before you added the mix.
You might discuss with the teacher whether you could work with a small amount of acetylene by using a carbide generator for the gas instead of handling a tank. Calcium carbide dropped in water or wetted makes the gas and was used for lighting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbide_lamp perhaps the smaller quantity would qualify you. Of course, there may be a strong bias away from having students make weapons.
