Nurses are often the first person a patient sees when they enter a hospital or medical facility, and quite often the last person they see as they leave. Nurses care for their patients - not just medical care, but also listening, consoling, and assisting with much more than they are trained or required. Long hours, often stressful environments, sick patients, and a tremendous amount of responsibility. And yet, the nurse continues on with a smile, making the room brighten upon his or her entry. When a patient recalls their last visit at the doctor's office or hospital, their nurse is often the individual who stands out in their mind as the one who made them feel better. Nurses know how to care. And although there are so many elements of the job for which they would like to complain, they go about their tasks with a smile, making each patient feel as though that patient is their only patient.
Nurses are giving and caring from the heart. They are completely and totally selfless, giving individuals. Although nurses around the world will tell you that their jobs are often rewarding, such has helping a patient walk for the first time after an accident, or having a cynical patient thank them for taking such great care of him, there are many, many difficult cases that require that special, giving personality carried by our nurses. Recently, a Labor and Delivery Nurse who hadn't yet announced her pregnancy was asked to bathe and swaddle a still-born baby. Pregnant nurses are rarely given this task for a variety of reasons. However, realizing that she was not outwardly pregnant and that this patient that she saw through the difficult labor needed her, she bathed the baby, swaddled her, and handed her to her parents so that they could say their good-byes to the baby they never got to meet. This nurse is not alone, she is an example of all nurses who are giving and caring and willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that their patients receive the proper attention they deserve, even in the most difficult of cases. Nurses don't just check temperatures and administer vaccinations. Nurses take their work to heart, truly caring about every patient with which they come in contact.
