stick weld problem the rod sticks to the metal?
hey i recently learnt how to stick weld but sometimes when i strike it the rod sticks to the metal is there a way to stop this?
It's always a potential problem. If you don't set the welder for high enough current it becomes more of a problem, so you might want to increase the current setting. Also, larger welders with bigger transformers seem to help the problem. They have sort of a welding "momentum" which helps burn away the rod that is touching before it can stick. My welder also has a high voltage starter that you can turn on. When you get the electrode close to the metal, the high voltage (low current) jumps the small gap ionizing the air (making it a conductor) so that the large current can start for the actual welding. Also try the "new" automatic darkening hoods that allow you to see what you are doing before the welding starts and then get a million times darker the instant the welding starts. Very cool! That helps you see exactly how far the electrode is from the work so you are less likely to stick it. Also try sort of a dragging motion to start.
